Pre-Camp Certification



Ward Camp Directors
Please CERTIFY the Young Women on the following before camp

Level 1
·        Learn how to properly extinguish a fire
·        Learn the fire regulations for your camping area
·        Cook at least 2 items using a fire or camp stove
·        Know the basic principles of storing and preparing food in the outdoors
o   First Aid (if they don’t come to the Stake Clinic)
§  Know the purpose of 1st Aid and the 4 steps of treatment
§  Demonstrate how to perform the Heimlich maneuver
§  Demonstrate how to give 1st Aid for excessive bleeding and poisoning
§  Learn how to fold a cravat bandage.  Demonstrate its’ uses.
§  Explain the use of items in your basic 1st Aid Kit

Level 2
·        Build 2 kinds of fires (light and extinguish them if fire regulations permit)
·        Plan and prepare 1 meal.  Know the basic principles of good nutrition
o   First Aid (If they don’t come to the Stake Clinic)
§  Demonstrate treatment for shock and fainting
§  Know 1st Aid for heat exhaustion & stroke, hypothermia & frostbite
§  Demonstrate how to give rescue breathing
Level 3
·        Show 2 ways to start a fire without matches
·        Tell how to waterproof matches
·        Try 2 types of outdoor cooking you haven’t done before
Example: Use a reflector oven, tinfoil dinner, or a Dutch oven; cook a hotdog or biscuit on a stick.  Be creative.
·        Demonstrate procedures for extinguishing accidental fires
o   First Aid (if they don’t come to the Stake Clinic)
§  Show emergency 1st Aid for bites, stings, burns and blisters
§  Show how to give CPR
Level 4
·        Prepare a meal using 2 different methods of cooking
Examples: cook in the coals (tin foil dinner), use a Dutch oven, use a camp stove or put a grate over the fire and cook on it. 
o   First Aid (if they don’t come to the Stake Clinic)
§  Know signs of broken bones and show 1st Aid procedures for handling broken bones
§  Demonstrate 4 methods of transporting an injured person
§  Demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver, rescue breathing CPR & review 1st Aid Skills
